How to Hard Reset Sony PRS600 and PRS900.

The Hard Reset steps for PRS600 and PRS900 are same. They are as follows:

(Hard Reset will delete all the data/files saved in the internal memory of the Reader.)
  1. Make sure that the Reader is turned OFF and fully charged before resetting it.
  2. Press the RESET button located at the bottom edge of the Reader using the Stylus or a pointed clip and turn it ON.
  3. "Opening book..." should display on the screen of the Reader. When the message "Opening book..." is displayed, press and hold the Page Turn (<) and the VOL + button for few moments.
  4. A message "Reset All" will display on the Reader screen. Once the message is displayed, touch "Yes" to complete the Hard Reset procedure.
If you wish to cancel the process, press the HOME button when the "Reset All" message appears.

How to Hard Reset Sony PRS300.

The Hard Reset steps for PRS300 are as follows:
(Hard Reset will delete all the data/files saved in the internal memory of the Reader.)
  1. Make sure that the Reader is turned OFF and fully charged before resetting it.
  2. Press the RESET button located at the bottom edge of the Reader using the Stylus or a pointed clip and turn it ON.
  3. "Opening book..." should display on the screen of the Reader. When the message "Opening book..." is displayed, press and hold the 0 button and the Down Arrow button of the circular directional button for few moments.
  4. A message "Reset All" will display on the Reader screen. Once the message is displayed, press the 5 button to complete the Hard Reset procedure.
If you wish to cancel the process, press the HOME button when the "Reset All" message appears. 

How to Hard Reset Sony PRS700.

The Hard Reset steps for PRS700 are as follows:
     (Hard Reset will delete all the data/files saved in the internal memory of the Reader.)
  1. Make sure that the Reader is turned OFF before resetting it.
  2. Press the RESET button located at the rear of the Reader using the Stylus or a pointed clip and turn it ON.
  3. The Reader should display the "Starting up..." message; when this message is displayed, press and hold the Back and the VOL + buttons at the same time. (The Back button is labeled as a curved arrow, it is used to return to the previous menu and the VOL + button is located at the base next to the Headphone jack).
  4. The "Reset All" message will appear on the screen, then touch "Yes" to reset the Reader.
  5. Once the process is completed, the Reader will turn OFF.

If you wish to cancel the process, press the MENU button when the "Reset All" message appears.

How to Hard Reset Sony PRS505.

The Hard Reset steps for PRS505 are as follows:
     (Hard Reset will delete all the data/files saved in the internal memory of the Reader.)

  1. Make sure that the Reader is turned OFF before resetting it.
    Press the RESET button located at the rear of the Reader using a pointed clip or a pin and turn it ON.
  2. Reader should display the "Starting up..." message; when this message is displayed, press and hold the MARK and the VOL + buttons at the same time. (The MARK button is labeled with a book symbol, it is used to create or remove bookmark of a page, and is located below the Circular button and the VOL + button is located at the base next to the Headphone jack).
  3. When the "Reset All" message is displayed on the screen, press the 5 button to reset the Reader.
  4. Once the process is completed, the Reader will turn OFF.

If you wish to cancel the process, press the MENU button.

How to Hard Reset Sony PRS500.

The Hard Reset steps for PRS500 are as follows:
     (Hard Reset will delete all the data/files saved in the internal memory of the Reader.)
  1. Make sure that the Reader is turned OFF before resetting it.
  2. Press the RESET button located at the rear (remove the cover) of the Reader using a pointed clip and turn it ON.
  3. Reader should display the "Starting up..." message; when this message is displayed, press and hold the MARK and the VOL+ buttons at the same time. (The MARK button is labeled as MARK and is located below the Circular button and the VOL+ button is located above the POWER switch).
  4. The Reader should display the "Reset All: Do you want to DELETE all content, restore all factory settings, and remove the CONNECT ID?" message, then press the 5 button to Hard Reset it. 
  5. It may take few minutes to complete the process. Once the process is completed, the Reader will turn OFF. 

If you wish to cancel Hard Reset, press MENU when the "Reset All" message appears.

Sony Reader is not turning ON.

If your Sony Reader is not turning ON, locked or frozen, try the following steps:
  1. Connect the Reader to a USB port of the Computer using the supplied USB cable or an AC outlet using an AC Adapter and leave it for approximately 5 or 10 min; then check if it turns ON by itself.
  2. If it does not turn ON by itself, slide the POWER switch and check. If it still does not turn ON, try resetting it. You can reset it when connected to the Computer or with disconnected.
  3. To reset the Reader, press the RESET button (labeled as RESET) using a pointed clip or the supplied Stylus. You can locate the RESET button at the rear or the base of the Reader depending on the model you're using.
  4. After pressing the RESET button, slide the POWER switch to the ON position and check if it turns ON.
  5. If the indicator light turns yellow, allow few minutes and check.
  6. If the indicator light is red when connected to the Computer or the AC Adapter, charge it fully and try turning it ON. (It takes approximately 4 hours to fully charge while using the USB connection and 2 hours while using the AC Adapter).
  7. If the Reader turns ON and the screen is frozen with the "Starting up..." message, try Hard Resetting it. 
There are 6 models of Sony Reader and the Hard Reset procedure is different for all the models.
In case of PRS900 Reader, you can try removing the battery and then reinsert it after 1 minute. Then, try turning it ON and check.
If the problem is not resolved after performing the above steps, then it may be due to some internal issue in the Reader. You can contact Sony to get it serviced.

How to delete music files or images from the Sony Reader.

You can delete the music files or the images from the Reader using the supplied (eBook) Reader Library Software.
Follow these few steps to delete the files from the Reader:

  1. Connect the Reader to the Computer and launch the Reader Library Software.
  2.  In the left pane of the Reader Library Software window, click on "Reader" or "Memory Stick".
  3. Below Reader or Memory Stick, click on "Audio" or "Pictures" and then select the file to be deleted.
  4. On the Reader Library Software Menu bar, click on "Edit" and then click on "Delete".
  5. A message "Are you sure you want to remove the items?" will appear, then click on "OK" to delete the file.

Sony Digital Reader "Calibration error ".

If your Sony Reader (PRS600, PRS700 or PRS900) is displaying the "Calibration error detected" message, try the following steps:

  1. The Reader will display a Calibration Screen. A symbol "X" will be displayed on the top left, top right, center, and at the bottom left and bottom right of the screen.
  2. Use the supplied Stylus or any similar object to touch the "X"symbol.  
  3. Once the process is completed, the Reader will display "Touch Panel calibration completed".
  4. Click on "OK" and it should work.
Please ensure that you touch exact the "X"symbol. If accidentally any other place is touched other than the "X" symbol, the "Calibration error" may display again.In that case, try the above steps accordingly and it should work.

How to charge the Sony Reader.

To charge your Reader, you can use an AC Adapter or the supplied USB cable. Follow the below given steps to charge the Reader:

   1. You can use the AC Adapter "ACS5220E" to charge the Reader. Connect the AC Adapter with the power cord to a working AC outlet and to the Reader. It should charge fully in approximately 2 hours. The indicator light will be red during this time.
   2. Another way to charge the Reader is by using the USB cable.

    * Turn ON the Reader and connect it to a USB port of the Computer directly without using any USB Hub using the USB cable.
    * It should display a icon indicating USB Connected and the Computer should display the USB device connected message.
    * Leave it connected to the Computer for approximately 4 hours to completely charge.
    * Once it is fully charged, the indicator light will turn yellow and the battery indicator will display 4 black bars.
    * If you are connecting the Reader to a Laptop/Notebook, make sure that the battery of the Laptop/Notebook is full or the Power Adapter of it is connected to the electrical outlet.
    * If the battery of the Reader is fully depleted, you will not be able to turn it ON. In this case, connect the Reader to the Computer and leave it connected. It may take 40 minutes to turn ON and display the icon. The indicator light be red during this time.
    * If the Computer enters into Hibernation or Sleep mode, the Reader will not charge and the red charge indicator on it will turn OFF.

What files the Sony Reader Support.

The Sony Readers (PRS500, PRS505, PRS600, PRS700, PRS300 and PRS900) support the following file formats:

Unsecured Text:
  • BBeB (Broad Band eBook designed by Sony). 
  • PDF (Portable Document Format by Adobe).
  • Adobe Digital Editions 1.5 or later.
  • TXT (Text file).
  • RTF (Rich Text Format)
  • EPUB (Electronic Publication).
  • Microsoft Word document.

DRM Text:
  • Adobe DRM protected contents.
  • The Book Marlin is compatible. However, it should be purchased from the eBook Store of Sony.
Audio files: MP3 and AAC7.

Image files: BMP, GIF, JPEG and PNG.
